Outdoors in Boulder With Kate

May 15, 2010

Kate and I were super outdoorsy today and it felt so nice. We rode our bicycles everywhere. We went to the Farmer's Market next to the creek, we walked along the Pearl Street Mall, then we went up onto the mountain behind my house.

That 'mountain' may just be a hill by Colorado standards, but it was pretty challenging. It is definitely a part of the Rocky Mountains, but it is the first mountain into the range so it is a bit whimpy. However, Kate and I were super proud of ourselves for scaling it. We went up the east side and forged our own path. We were like modern day pioneers except we were sort of in my neighbor's backyard still. It didn't matter because when we made it to the top we felt so cool!

While Kate and I were hiking around we saw a surprising large amount of people doing the same thing we were. People just laying on the rocks and climbing around. There was even a black labrador who was an expert climber. The pictures that you see make Kate and I look like super cool mountain people, but really we climbed the easiest hill possible. The first mountain of the Rocky Mountains is really a molehill.

On our way down we headed west and were going to come around the other side. We were shocked when after what seemed like only a few baby steps, we were back at my house. It turns out that the way we went up was the hardest way possible and on the other side of the hill was a perfectly navigable and storable path to the top.

At least I know the better way to go up now. Keep that in mind Brigitte! There are some super cool spots up there that we will go when you visit.
