A New Age for The Crazy Monkeys

April 11, 2010

The Show is up online now and you can watch it above to relive one of the great shows that the Monkeys have put on this year. Following suit with the last three shows, this one was in Matthews 210.

That little auditorium has been the home of The Monkeys probably since they were called National Velveeta in the Eighties. It has mostly witnessed The Monkeys performing their signature short form style for years with the recent occasional sprinkling of a long form. It was always one or the other until we invented our own format and officially debuted it to the world Friday night.

When we did long form it was either a Harold or a Groundlings Clap In. The Harold requires an audience that will look for the themes of an entire show instead of laugh at single one liners. Unfortunately, the majority of the world falls into the latter category along with lovers of Michael Bay Explosions and The Blue Collar Comedy Tour. That is why The Crazy Monkeys usually associate long form with The Clap In.

A three threaded story about events that may or may not be linked. The entire show is based off the first three suggestions. We learned the format from The Groundlings at Indiana University's Comedy Festival in February 2009 and since then have felt like we have been ripping it off. Even if we were pulling it off flawlessly, which we weren't, The Monkeys were not satisfied.

Our format opens with a line game that is followed by two scenic short form games and then either Sex is Like or Objection. During the last line game one of the players must swipe across the stage and initiate a long form using the ideas gained from the previous short form games. The format might as well be called the Call Back because anything presented in the first half can be used in the long form. The format was inspired by Octavarius's use of Objection to be the foundation of their long form.

The Crazy Monkeys have been a short form improv troupe for over fifteen years and so to completely abandon our past by adopting long form permanently would be lunacy. Some people, like me, are all for the heresy, but the new format is the perfect compromise. All of the suggestions are acquired during the short form games and then the long form bits are derived from what just occurred on stage not a half hour ago, brilliant!

The very first show featuring the new format was actually on Thursday night at The Egyptian Hookah Bar. John locked his keys in his car in Chicago so I hosted the show. Hosting was real fun and foreshadowing to next semester. Well actually that is a rumor, but what is absolutely true is that The Monkeys tried the format and it was successful. The audience laughed and our confidence was filled just enough to overflow into the next night.

Just watch the show because I want to switch topics and talk about the after party.

Hey, have the dedicated followers of my blog been curious as to what, if anything, came about with that ultra cute girl who I met at the last show? Oh, well why don't I tell you.

Facebook is for stalking. I looked at the guest list for the event and she was on it. That made me real nervous. I was looking forward to hanging out with her later that night, but at the time she still had stranger status. She came over and we danced to Empire of the Sun and sat on my bed and talked. She is a cuddly little cat and although rivaling Wendy is a deadly idea, this girl is just so cute. I have a feeling she is reading this so I'll cut the flattery short and maybe even say these things to her later.

I claimed that the party on March 26th was the best party at party Central ever, but Friday night was a record breaker. Actually it was near identical with one cute exception. Everyone left at three and the four remaining people made a pillow fort in the front room. I was using a bar stool as a pillow, but I certainly was not uncomfortable. I can only imagine what the face of the guy who let himself into our apartment looking for his friend Dee was thinking when he saw eight feet sticking out of a bunch of blankets. It didn't last forever though. My cat Wendy was apparently jealous that she couldn't be in the fort with us so she jumped on it and destroyed all of our hard work. That is OK Wendy I still will give you kit kisses.

The month of April has been so much fun and will only get better! This month just may be better than the entire other forty-seven of my college career so far. I am super fortunate. Thank you God that I practically have no school work and am counting down the days until I go to Boulder, in the company of my best friends and loads of handsome new strangers.
