The Conclusion of 24 Hour Comic Book Day

March 14, 2010

24 Hour Comic Book Day, what a nutty idea. It all started because of my friend Mike Dodaro's love for comic books. He owns thousands and over last summer he got me into the New Avengers series.

Last week, Mike invited me over Facebook to part in 24 HCBD and I originally selected the 'Not Attending' radio button. I could have been like everyone and hit 'Maybe', but it is good to be decisive and besides, it was the truth. I was not going to have any time. That is what I thought initially.

This semester is the first one in the last four to not feature any CGT courses. It feels great and I am taking care of all the classes I need to graduate, but the fall back is that I haven't created anything at all. That didn't sit well with me so I realized that 24 HCBD would be my reason to excuse myself from a busy schedule cop-out. I was going to be able to sit down for a full day and just create instead of take care of errands and class work.

Another great reason to participate was that the event was at my apartment. Scott McCloud created the concept of 24 HCBD, but I didn't want to follow the rules exactly. Instead, I wanted to get as much work as possible completed on a traditionally animated walk cycle. With my tablet on my lap I did just that.

24 HCBD officially kicked off at 11 AM March 13th. We had a twelve pack of Monster Energy Drink, loads of Cheez Its, and a full airpot of Greyhouse Coffee's Kenyan coffee. Those ingredients would surely keep us going for twenty-four hours right?

Well, no. We worked hard and I was impressed that I was able to sit in a chair for so long without getting super sore, but we only made it to 19. We did take a break to play Four Square and another to eat a really big pizza, so maybe it was more like eight-teen. But whatever, everyone still made a comic book and I laid down some serious frames.

Perhaps another attempt is necessary. I have never actually stayed awake for a full day. I always hit the wall at twenty-three. Look below to see the work I did during the event and judge lightly because it is my first hand drawn walk cycle. How Purdue's Graphics department lets their students get away with not doing one is a mystery and an entire new post. Overall, 24 HCBD was a super success and super fun time.
